Tapped
Out in the 5th Round
“Tapped
Out in the 5th Round” is a customized FightStylez t-shirt inspired by the
riveting, 5-round championship MMA fights that we’ve all experienced and
enjoyed throughout the years in various different MMA leagues. These leagues include the UFC, Strikeforce,
Bellator Fighting Championship, WEC, and all other professional Mixed Martial
Arts leagues that feature their championship bouts in 5-round affairs. In the biggest Mixed Martial Arts league in
the world today, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, 5-round fights are traditionally
saved for championship affairs, or title eliminator bouts. Since the Ultimate Fighting Championship or
UFC has been sanctioned by athletic commissions and owned under the Zuffa
banner, most title bouts have been contested in 5 rounds instead of the normal
3. A 5th round finish within those title
bouts is even more rare, let alone a 5th round submission finish where one
fighter is forced to tap out.
One of
if not the most memorable fifth round finishes happened to be by submission at
UFC 117 where UFC middleweight champion Anderson “the Spider” Silva submitted
his nemesis and long time middleweight contender Chael Sonnen with a triangle
choke. During that historic main event,
Chael Sonnen had the upper hand for four and a half rounds, and put a beating
on Anderson Silva with a relentless and constant ground and pound attack. What Anderson Silva was able to do that Chael
Sonnen was not able to do, however, was finish his opponent. He did so by triangle choke in the fifth and
final round, and thus Chael Sonnen “Tapped Out in the 5th Round.”
Mixed
Martial Arts aside, at a bar, 5 rounds of any adult beverage, especially liquor
shots, is a lot for anybody to handle.
Actually, it is probably at least one or two too many in a short time
period, no matter the size of the guy who is partaking in the festivities. As can be seen by the FightStylez MMA fighter
who had at least one too many shots, like Chael Sonnen, he was also forced to
tap out in the 5th round but as well, but for different reasons. The bartender, who also happens to be a Mixed
Martial Artist himself, has served the fallen fighter five rounds, but I guess
he couldn’t keep up midway through the 5th round. There is no shame in tapping out though,
especially if you’ve made it to the 5th round, which is widely known in Mixed
Martial Arts as a “championship round.”
