Heel Hook

The heel hook is one of the most popular and widely recognized leg lock submission holds in combat sambo, catch wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and of course, Mixed Martial Arts and the Ultimate Fighting Championship.  The technique of a proper heel hook can yield devastating results when applied correctly.  By trapping an opponent’s heel with one’s arm and then turning and angling the heel in a direction that it’s not supposed to turn, the recipient may face serious injury to the foot and knee.  Many Mixed Martial Arts fighters have utilized the heel hook on their road to victory, and unfortunately caused some injuries in the process.  Notable names such as Rousimar Palhares, Ken Shamrock, and Fedor Emelianenko always kept a heel hook in their back pocket in case the opportunity presented itself.  Leg locks are generally paramount in grappling, mixed martial arts, and self defense.  Although there are a wide variety of leg locks to choose from, the heel hook may be one of if not the most dangerous.  Several fighters have lost months’ worth of competition in their prime due to this occasionally crippling maneuver.
