Boards Don’t Hit Back

One of Bruce Lee’s core concepts in Jeet Kune Do was to eliminate all of the techniques, forms, and traditions that did not apply or functionally work in a hand-to-hand combat, self-defense, or one-on-one situation.  Rather, Bruce Lee advocated for focusing on the techniques of the various different martial arts styles, including Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, boxing, kickboxing, grappling, wrestling, judo, jiu jitsu, and all other martial arts styles that actually were functional, and combine those techniques and styles fluidly and into one.  Due in large part to his innovative, enlightened, and ahead-of-his-time philosophies, Bruce Lee is known and referred to by many as the founding father of mixed martial arts.  One of the practices and traditions that Bruce Lee was vehemently against was the idea board breaking or brick breaking.  In traditional martial arts styles, most notably the many styles of Karate and Tae Kwon Do, for a martial artist under those styles to graduate, they must simply break a board to graduate and earn the next belt or promotion.

The flaw that Bruce Lee saw in this tradition was that the board is placed or held perfectly still, without any resistance, and just waits to be kicked, punched, elbowed, or otherwise struck.  Most instances, even without proper technique, the types of boards that are used will indeed break.  As Bruce Lee noticed back in the 1960’s and 1970’s, board breaking was in no way indicative of a person’s ability to fight a live opponent.  He spread this message far and wide in a memorable fight scene in the movie, “Enter the Dragon,” when he warned his opponent, who attempted to intimidatingly break a board in front of Bruce, that, “Boards…don’t hit back.”  Bruce Lee went on to hit his opponent, who happened to be quite adept at board breaking, several times, and pummeled him en route to victory.

FightStylez now has its own rendition of the proven martial arts philosophy that Boards Don’t Hit Back.  In this customized tee shirt, we have a martial artist who is breaking a board, just like many martial artists have been doing for decades if not centuries.  However, even though the board in this illustration did not hit back, he was actually alive and seemed like he would have had a chance to.  Still, as Bruce Lee predicted, a grown man, especially one trained in a martial art, would indeed have the edge in a fight over a board, even if that board was alive.  In this t-shirt, a board is as a board does.  He did not hit back, just like Bruce predicted.
